Starman (Jockey Club name Starbird Road) is a 22 year old Thoroughbred gelding. He set the North American track records for both 5 and 6 furlongs in 2006. Starman has had a rough year medically - he had a serious infection in his hock (with no injury), which meant two months of hospitalization at a cost of $11,000 (gulp!). later he came home. Even though it was thought he would be left with a limp, he's been completely sound! However, he hasd lost a lot of weight and was not putting it back on. He went back to the hospital and an ultrasound showed that he had a large mass on his spleen and enlarged liver, and the vets suspected cancer. On the outside chance it was an abscess on his spleen, he was put on a new antibiotic (Minocycline) and Milk Thistle for his liver. One month later the mass had gone down significantly, his liver was perfectly normal, and he had gained nearly 30lbs!! He will need to stay on the antibiotic for a while longer and he will be on Milk Thistle permanently. The good news is, Starman plays like a five year old, running and bucking. Fat and sassy! His most important achievement is that every one of the kids who were matched up with Starman through our equine assisted psychotherapy program have made significant positive changes and are off the suicide watch. They say, it was Starman who changed their lives.
Starman is hoping that Santa will help him out with the Milk Thistle (500 g is $33.76) and also bring him some 100X Equine GutX (SCR can get a special price on this one).
He would like a hoodedwaterproof turnout blanket (size 82, 220 g, runs $169.00) and a tub of soft peppermints (26 oz of Bob's Sweet Stripes is $19.35).
Special Horses, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization. It is a GuideStar Platinum Participant and has been a Great Nonprofit since 2015. Since 2009, our mission has been to provide outstanding 501(c)(3) equine rescue organizations with fundraising opportunities, marketing assistance, educational opportunities, grant assistance and community outreach. The organizations we support are dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming horses in need, and are carefully screened and selected based on their trustworthy reputation, dedication, and excellent service to the animals in their care. Rescuing horses leaves these organizations little time to plan, organize, and execute fundraisers and outreach, and it is the mission of Special Horses to help them help equines in need.
